Plus Size Retailers
So ladies, I'm pretty sure we all share similar, if not the same issues when it comes to high street retailers. But as a curvy woman living, working & loving in London, are you fed up of being left disappointed with what's on offer, only to come home (with everything BUT what you wanted) and end up on your laptop with a glass of Prosecco for a few hours? Well, you're not alone, TRUST ME!
I've listed below some of my fav' go-to online retailers that I'm bound to find a little something:
Gone are the days of trudging up and down the high street looking...hoping...praying that you find an outfit that:
1: you like
2: fits you
3: comes in at a reasonable price
I remember back in the day (I'm talking before internet & mobile phones) where I had to either try my luck down Wood Green, when we had shops like Pearsons, C&A, Peacocks & Dolcis! or jump on the underground to head up to Oxford Street where I'd go into shops like Selfridges, Debenhams, House of Fraser & go through the racks like it was "Supermarket Sweep" until I find something in my size or the closest thing that ran large in the normal sizes that I can squeeze into. Back then, I don't ever remember shops like New Look, Top Shop, H&M having sizes 18+, it'll be the likings of Evans & M&S that would.
In my mid-teens I remember me & a couple of my friends put our stamp on the pattern tights that we'd get from Pearson & cut off one the legs off, yes, I said it...but wait! we'd then wear them on top of plain black tights, in so mixing up some of the dresses/skirts that we had to make "stretch" throughout the week. Fashion then for me was influenced by the RnB, Reggae & Hip Hop scene, with artist & groups like Jodeci, Mary J Blige, 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G, Aaliyah etc...I even remember rocking the finger waves, like the girls in Total & wearing the baggy jeans with a crop-top not forgetting the shades that stayed mainly on the top of your head lol.
As with time, fashion also brings change so I'm happy to say & without any regrets, kinda, I've deffo moved on from that era, but I will say that my inner-youth is over gass'd that leggings came back around lol! Now in my mid-ish 30's, I'm content knowing I not only have a better understanding of fashion & what suits my body type but that I have more options of retailer that I can go (online) & purchase clothes that are 'in season' & available in my size. With that said & without further ado, lets get into this post & breakdown some of my fav online retailers:
Oww I love me some ASOS Curve....if you haven't been on this site before, where you been? you're in for a treat. I can honestly say (as I ain't getting sponsored) that 9/10 times I end up keeping everything I've order from them. The quality out weighs a lot of other main stream retailers but that's because Asos's mark-up is higher, due to the fact they not only do their own brand they also carry main stream & designer brands such as Nike, Pull&Bear, Kurt Geiger & Public Desire.
They've introduce another payment option, Klarna, which I used it for the first time a couple of weeks ago and it was smooth sailing until I made a payment. When I logged into my Klarna account and carried through to paying, it took payment twice @ £274 each!! I didn't realise till the next day when I was checking another payment and noticed my budget was significantly low & the little beads of sweat started to form on my forehead causing the eyebrow to lift....nobody wants to be around me when that happens, not even me lol. Anyway, after a cool down I contacted them from the app & the lady (who was nice enough) processed a refund, but didn't answer my question to why it happened, either way, it got sorted & back into my account the same day instead of the up to 5 working days she'd said.
When I first came across Fashion Nova Curve, I was so sceptical yet excited about it, I was like "here we go again, another Chinese website saying they cater to plus size women". Firstly, they're based in downtown Los Angeles, USA & deliver free (depending if you meet the minimum spend) to the UK & secondly, they actually cater for us in a big way. You hear rappers/singers mentioning this site with lyrics like "Fashion Nova jeans grip that ass right", it's TRUE they DO!
I'd advise when shopping on here though, bare in mind the currency and how far your £ will go, but they now have the option to convert from USD to GBP. I started when the GBP was stronger in the economy and my packages were of a 'size', now in 2020, I'm yet to make my first purchase but with spring around the corner I may just have to change that! Also, pending on the type of garment you want, be sure to take a glance at the size chart, I range from a UK size 18-22 & buy 2X or 3X on Fashion Nova as they do like to stock the tight fit outfits, but as I say "just because it's in your size, doesn't mean it's for you girl"!
I found out that PLT started as a humble online store by brothers Umar & Adam in 2012 & stocked about 20 items and now they're globally successful company making big change in the plus size industry. In my opinion, they have a good selection of trendy urban wear but I think, with also a few other sites, they're more targeted to 'older GIRL younger WOMAN' (did you catch what I did there) age bracket i.e. 18-45 year old. I tend to wait till they're sales or offers but with PLT I don't mind paying full price as it's affordable & fashion forward.
Nitin Passi, the CEO, started off in the New York fashion industry and decided to venture out & create what we know now as Missguided. Like Pretty Little Thing, Missguided caters to us curvy+ ladies, but I think they stock more everyday wear which is also just as affordable & very much on trend.
I find Boohoo (not Boho, like what I used to say) to be hit or miss when it comes to their plus size sizing chart. Without fail, I would order items in my size and I can pretty much guarantee you it would be too small! So after a lot of returns and re-orders I can reveil that I order 1 or 2 sizes up, depending on the cut & type of garment. I will say, from their opening in 2006 the stock has come along way and relevant.
